Principal Investigator

Gavan P. McNally PhD

Gavan is Professor and ARC Future Fellow in the School of Psychology at UNSW Australia.

He completed his undergraduate training in Psychology prior to a PhD in Behavioural Neuroscience at UNSW and postdoctoral training at University of Michigan in Molecular Neuroscience.

Gavan is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, a recipient of the Pavlovian Research Award from the Pavlovian Society, and is on the Editorial Boards of The Journal of Neuroscience, Behavioral Neuroscience, and Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Learning and Cognition.

Postdoctoral Fellows

Asheeta A. Prasad PhD

Asheeta is a Postdoctoral Fellow. She completed her PhD at University of Utrecht, the Netherlands, following a  Masters in Molecular Biology from University of Queensland, Australia, and a Bachelor of Biomedical Science University of Western Sydney, Australia. Asheeta leads work on our optogenetics and DREADDs projects probing the roles of thalamostriatal and striatopallidal circuits in the relapse to drug seeking.

Neda Assareh PhD

Neda is a Postdoctoral Fellow. She completed her PhD at University of Nottingham, UK, following an MSc in  Physiology from Islamic Azad University, North Tehran Unit, Iran, and a  Bachelor of Science, Isfahan University, School of Science, Isfahan, Iran. Neda leads work on our optogenetics projects probing organisation of defensive and fear circuits in the midbrain.

PhD Students

Philip Jean-Richard Dit Bressel

Phil is a PhD student in the lab, in the final year of his PhD. He is studying the neural circuits underlying punishment. Phil completed his undergraduate degree at UNSW Australia.

Kate Hutton-Bedbrook

Kate is a PhD student in the lab, in the final year of her PhD. She is studying extinction of drug seeking with a focus on the role of glutamate actions at the mGlu5 and NMDA receptors.

Joanna Yau

Jo is a PhD student in the lab, in the final year of her PhD. She is studying the role of prefrontal cortex in fear learning, with particular focus on the role in signalling prediction errors.

Auntora Sengupta

Auntora is a PhD student in the lab. She is studying the role of basolateral amygdala principal neurons in encoding prediction errors during Pavlovian fear conditioning.

Carolyn Arico

Carolyn is a PhD student in the lab. She is studying the role of periaqueductal gray in Pavlovian fear conditioning, specifically in the encoding and signalling of fear prediction errors.

Shaun Khoo

Shaun is a PhD student in the lab. He completed his undergraduate degree at The University of Melbourne. Shaun is studying the role of the neuropeptide orexin in relapse to drug seeking.

Gabrielle Gibson

Gabrielle is a PhD student in the lab. She is studying the role of ventral striatum, and its projections to the hypothalamus, ventral pallidum, and ventral tegmental area in extinction and relapse to drug seeking.

Lucy (Eun A) Choi

Lucy is a PhD student in the lab. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biology at Chungnam National University, South Korea and followed this with a Masters of Science at UNSW Australia. Lucy is studying the role of paraventricular thalamus in emotional learning.

Jamie Dracup

Jamie is a PhD student in the lab. He completed his undergraduate degree in Science at UNSW Australia. Jamie is working in close collaboration with Associate Professor Pascal Carrive (School of Medical Sciences UNSW) on hypothalamic control of autonomic and defensive behaviour.

2015 Honours Students

Chloe Oastler

Chloe joined the lab after completing Years 1 - 3 of her undergraduate degree at UNSW. She is studying the role of the prefrontal cortical pyramidal neurons in the consolidation and maintenance of extinction learning in a drug seeking preparation.

Constance Peng

Constance joined the lab after completing Years 1  - 3 of her undergraduate degree at Monash University. She is studying the role of basolateral amygdala principal cells in the learning in response to fear prediction errors.
